WinBot Is A New Window Cleaning Robot

Robotics has come a far way in the last decade or so and we seem to be progressing at a rapid speed. Nowadays, we are looking at robots that are capable of doing stuff which would require us a lot of effort and time. With these robots, we can have the work done in only a fraction of time and minimal effort. Among many such robots, a new invention is the WINBOT. The name sounds a bit unique, no? Well, once you know the task which this robot is capable of performing, the name would make sense as well. This … Continue reading WinBot Is A New Window Cleaning Robot

Futuristic Human Like Robots Unveiled At The DARPA Robotics Challenge

The DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC) is a two-year Pentagon-funded competition which pushes the contestants to design the most humanistic robots possible. The aim of the challenge is to develop robots that will be able to perform human-like functions in environments and conditions that are not suitable or safe for human beings. The first physical trials were held on the 20th of December at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Florida. The trials consisted of a series of eight tasks which included an obstacle course and various other challenges. Here is a look at some of the contenders of the DRC. 1. THOR and … Continue reading Futuristic Human Like Robots Unveiled At The DARPA Robotics Challenge

Factory-in-a-Day Lets Small Businesses Hire A Factory For Manufacturing

Even if you come up with a business idea which is feasible enough to grow, the worst nightmare is to survive the competition in the industry. Most of all, the manufacturing industry is affected by this competition where small businesses are unable to compete with all the high-tech production lines that are being used by major corporations. European Union saw this as a problem and decided to do something about this in order to provide the smaller businesses with a chance to compete with bigger corporations. Their solution is being called Factory-in-a-Day and well, it sure is something. The key … Continue reading Factory-in-a-Day Lets Small Businesses Hire A Factory For Manufacturing

DARPA Robotics Challenge Trials: What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Expect to See

We’re super excited for the DARPA Robotics Challenge Trials that run tomorrow and Saturday, and we hope you are too. Before we get all wrapped up in it, though, it’s important to understand what’s realistic to expect from the robots during the competition, to prevent yourself from (let’s be honest here) experiencing some level of (potentially profound) disappointment. The context in which you should think about the DRC Trials is similar to the first DARPA Grand Challenge for autonomous vehicles that took place back in 2004. DARPA announced the event in 2002, giving 15 teams less than two years to develop fully autonomous vehicles that could navigate … Continue reading DARPA Robotics Challenge Trials: What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Expect to See

NASA unveils 6-foot ‘superhero robot’ Valkyrie

Designed to compete in the DARPA Robotics Challenge, this “female” robot could be the precursor to robo-astronauts that will help colonize Mars. Valkyrie has 44 axes of movement and interchangeable arms. (Credit: IEEE Spectrum ) What if NASA’s Robonaut grew legs and indulged in steroids? The result might be close to what NASA has unveiled: Valkyrie is a humanoid machine billed as a “superhero robot.” Developed at the Johnson Space Center, Valkyrie is a 6.2-foot, 275-pound hulk designed to compete in the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC). It will go toe to toe with the Terminator-like Atlas robot from Boston Dynamics … Continue reading NASA unveils 6-foot ‘superhero robot’ Valkyrie

Google and robots: The future just got a lot closer

Don’t look for an Android-powered Wall-E anytime soon, but Google’s recent move toward robotics signals a big momentum shift getting under way. The Meka S2 humanoid head, from one of the robotics companies that Google bought. (Credit: Meka) Ready or not, we’re about to enter the age of robotics. That’s the message underlying Google’s announcement on Wednesday that former Android honcho Andy Rubin would be aiming the company’s next “moon shot” at robots. Google has bought its way into the robotics game, purchasing seven companies to become the foundation of its robotics team, from makers of robotic arms and powered … Continue reading Google and robots: The future just got a lot closer

Andy Rubin’s next Google moonshot project: Robots

The former Android leader is in charge of one of Google’s “moonshots,” an effort to use robots to free humans from drudgery. One of the small robotics firms that Google has acquired is Schaft, a Japanese company focusing on a humanoid robot. (Credit: Schaft) When Andy Rubin handed leadership of the Android project to Sundar Pichai, the speculation began about what Rubin would be doing next for Google. Now we know: robots. In an interview with The New York Times on Wednesday, Rubin said his robotics project is at the heart of one of Google’s long-term, big-deal “moonshot” programs that … Continue reading Andy Rubin’s next Google moonshot project: Robots

UBR-1 Robot From Unbounded Robotics Revolutionizes Affordable Mobile Manipulation

Photo: Unbounded Robotics UBR-1 during a coffee break. We’ve been following Unbounded Robotics, the final spin-off from Willow Garage, since we first learned of the company’s existence back in April. Unbounded has been working in stealth mode for the past year, but our best guess was that they were developing a low-cost mobile manipulator for research and education: something like a PR2, except (we were hoping) significantly cheaper. Today, Unbounded is unveiling UBR-1, a shiny new human-scale one-armed robot designed to completely revolutionize the market for research and education robotics and beyond, for just a tiny fraction of the cost … Continue reading UBR-1 Robot From Unbounded Robotics Revolutionizes Affordable Mobile Manipulation
