Apple's Mac Pro on sale today

Apple is releasing its radically redesigned Mac Pro today, but you’ll need at least a cool $4,000 to pick one up.

The new beasty hardware takes up around one-eighth the space of its predecessor and is a massive change in design as well, opting for a cylindrical design rather than the old, boring rectangular box.

The Mac Pro, described by Apple as “built for creativity on an epic scale,” also doesn’t compromise on power; it can be configured to boast a quad-, 6-core or 12-core Intel Xeon processor, dual AMD FirePro graphics cards, up to 64GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of super-fast PCI-Express flash storage.

In Australia, the base level quad-core Mac Pro will set you back AU$3,999, and the 6-core step-up model is AU$5,2999. Apple’s US pricing is cheaper, at US$2,999 for the base model and US$3,999 for the 6-core model (both before sales tax).

It’s expected the maximum configuration of the computer will set you back over $10,000.

The Mac Pro page still says “coming in December” but it should be available to purchase if you walk into an Apple store right now.
