Japan has surpassed the United States as the world’s largest spender on mobile apps.
Data from App Annie, a mobile analytics firm, shows that mobile app revenue surged over the last year as more people moved from feature phones to smartphones. Japan outspent the second-largest spender, the U.S., by about 10 percent.
One of the biggest reasons for the increase in app spending isn’t just smartphone penetration — which increased from 28 percent last year to 42 percent in 2013 — but Japan’s appetite for mobile games.
And don’t expect mobile app spending to slow anytime soon. The report projects Japan’s smartphone penetration to grow 20 percent to reach 62 percent in 2014.
